Ceiling Lifts & Mobility Transfer Systems to Maintain Your Independence

Moving from bed to bath to other rooms - or from bed to wheelchair and back - can be particularly difficult for seniors and others who have mobility challenges but want to remain independent and save money by staying in their homes. One excellent solution is to install a ceiling lift system.

Ceiling Lifts or Ceiling Track Systems consist of a lift motor which travels along a track permanently mounted to the ceiling. A proper sling and carry bar combination - chosen by your PT - is attached to the motor for the person with mobility challenges to be transferred safely and comfortably. When the switch for the lift is activated the strap travels up and down, raising and lowering the person sitting within. Ceiling lifts do not take up any floor space and the unit is usually stored at the end of the track and out of the way near a wall.

To transfer a loved one, the caregiver uses the sling to lift the person, then uses the system to move them along the track to be lowered in the desired location. Tracks can be located in one room or throughout the home depending on your needs. All Ceiling Track systems use an electric motor to lift and lower the individual, with some utilizing a second motor to move the unit along the track. The second motor is helpful when the caregiver is unable to move the person being cared for along the track by hand, or the person using the system wants to propel themselves. In some instances (with proper personnel near) there are those who can put on their own slings, lift, and propel themselves, making their transfers totally independent.

There are two main types of Ceiling Lift systems. The first has a motor permanently attached in the track. This type of lift is most common and can be utilized in a single room situation or throughout the house using the many accessories available to access just about everywhere in your home.

The second type is a Portable Ceiling Lift system. With this type the lift motor/carry bar combination is attached to a wheeled trolley which travels along a ceiling mounted track or one of many combinations of free-standing systems. These often involve no alterations or intrusions into your home's interior walls or ceilings. This type of lift can be moved from one track to another in different locations in your home or multiple homes and/or vacation locations as the track is relatively inexpensive and can be installed or simply assembled anywhere and easily transferred.
